We missed Q3 ARR target by 18% ($1.2M vs $1.46M). Board meeting is in 10 days. I need to build the deck but I'm not sure how to frame the miss without losing credibility. We have good news on product and NRR is at 112%. Help me structure this.
Missing revenue is a credibility test — the board will respect honest framing far more than spin. Here's the deck structure:
Recommended Slide Order:
- Executive Summary — headline metrics, miss acknowledged upfront, forward outlook
- Q3 Scorecard — ARR $1.2M vs $1.46M (-18%), NRR 112% ✓, pipeline coverage, burn
- Why We Missed — root cause only (no defensive narrative). Was it pipeline generation, sales cycle length, or deal slippage?
- What Changed — corrective actions already taken (not planned)
- Product Progress — your good news; connect to retention story (NRR 112% proves product value)
- Q4 Forecast — bottoms-up by rep, with confidence tiers (commit / upside / stretch)
- Ask — be specific: budget, headcount approval, or decision needed
Key framing principles:
- Lead with the number, not context — boards respect founders who don't bury the lead
- NRR 112% is your strongest asset: it shows the miss is a new-logo problem, not a product/retention problem
- For Q4 forecast: show pipeline coverage ratio (need 3x for credible commit)
What was the primary cause of the miss — pipeline shortfall or deal slippage?

How to install and use this skill in your preferred environment.
Skills are designed for AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf) and IDE-based workflows where the agent can read files, run scripts, and act on your codebase. Web-based AI can use the knowledge and frameworks, but won't have tool access.
Models & Context
Which AI models and context windows work best with this skill.
Recommended Models
Larger models produce more detailed, production-ready outputs.
Context Window
This skill's SKILL.md is typically 3–10 KB — fits in any modern context window.
All current frontier models (Claude, GPT, Gemini) support 100K+ context. Use the full window for complex multi-service work.
Pro tips for best results
Be specific
Include numbers — users, budget, RPS — so the skill can size the architecture.
Share constraints
Compliance needs, team size, and existing stack all improve the output.
Iterate
Start with a high-level design, then ask follow-ups for IaC, cost analysis, or security review.
Combine skills
Pair with companion skills below for end-to-end coverage.
