We're redesigning our checkout flow for a SaaS product. Before we build, I want to run usability tests on the prototype. I've never run formal usability tests before. Can you help me plan the sessions?
Usability Test Plan — Checkout Flow Redesign
Goal: Identify friction points in the new checkout prototype before engineering investment.
Participants: 5–8 users (diminishing returns after 5 per Nielsen). Recruit from your current free-tier users who haven't converted — they're closest to the actual decision moment.
Session structure (45 min each):
- Warm-up (5 min) — "Tell me about the last time you signed up for a paid software tool."
- Scenario task (25 min) — "You've decided to upgrade to the Pro plan. Please go ahead and do that." Observe silently. Do NOT help.
- Debrief (10 min) — "Where did you hesitate? What did you expect to happen when you clicked X?"
- Rating (5 min) — Single Ease Question: "How difficult was completing the checkout, 1–7?"
What to capture per session:
